Three cameras have been used (so far) to produce the photos on this site:
- Kodak DC210 The first digital camera I bought, used for all photos on the
site from 7 March to 21 October 1998. Picture resolution of 1152x864 pixels wasn't bad, but the lens quality wasn't up
to much, resulting in poor sharpness, and it was a fixed focus machine.
- Nikon CoolPix 900 A far superior camera, used on the site from
23 October 1998 to 24 April 1999. Autofocus, improved resolution of 1280x960, a superb Nikkor lens,
and the 'swivel body' which allows photos to be taken above head-height whilst viewing the composition on
the screen at the back - a Godsend for the gig photographer. The best digital camera for the job
on the market for less than £1000...
- Nikon CoolPix 950 ...until it was improved. Auto, aperture-priority or
shutter-priority modes, auto or manual focus, a variety of flash modes, resolution up to 1600x1200, plus
a million other settings make this a true "photograher's camera", taking digital cameras out
of the point-and-shoot market.
- Olympus E-10 A top-notch digital SLR for 2001, 2240x1680. I don't use it too much for live photography, since the Nikon is good enough and far more portable.
For more info on gig photography, have a read of the article I wrote on the subject for
FishTank Music magazine in June 1999.
