Me & My Pots

Pots are thrown on an electric wheel, using a soft brown earthenware clay:

  • Clay is wedged and needed until smooth.
  • A ball is formed, and slammed onto the wheel head.
  • Clay is centred and a central hole made.
  • Sides are pulled up in stages to form a cylinder.
  • The shape of the vessel is formed.

  • Once finished, the pot is left until "leather hard". When hard, handles are added, shapes altered and a creamy white slip applied.

  • Colours and designs are added later.
  • When completely dry, pots are bisque-fired to approximately 960 deg C.
  • A clear or coloured glaze is applied to the pots.
  • After glazing, pots are fired to 1060 deg C. 15-18 hours later, the kiln is cool and the finished piece emerges!
